LMI Interviews & Reviews

OPIATE FOR THE MASSES

Band members:
Ron Underwood – vocals
Jim Kaufman – guitar
Anna Kjellberg – bass
Seven Antonopolous – drummer

This is a great band!! If you have not seen them, watch for them. They are like Billy Idol meets Rob Zombie with influence from Metallica and on and on. They are a great, in your face, hard rock, metal band.

Founding member Jim Kaufman formed the band in 1999 shortly before Underwood teamed up with him. The two began writing songs and released a CD on Kevin Lyman’s (Van’s Warped Tour) record label Warcon Enterprises.

The band has played with Marilyn Manson, Static-X and Drowning Pool. Their influences were NIN, Tool and Ministry…..how could they go wrong!

The band is currently on tour with Filter. Their new CD, Manifesto, is set to be released this week. Check them out at www.opiateforthemasses.com

ism

Band members:
Andre Mistier – vocals
Greg Evans – drums
Gerard Toriello – guitar
Leigh Battle – bass

The New York-based band ism is fronted by singer-songwriter Andre Mistier. Formed in 2003, the band is releasing a new CD, Urgency on STM Records August 5th.

Mistier described his music on Urgency as “mixing organic with inorganic, music for the party at the end of the world”. He mixes rock and electronic elements with danceable vibes and emotional lyrics. His favorite song on the CD is “Sacred Cows”, a song about religion and philosophy, the parts of our lives that we accept without questioning. “If you choose to do something, you should know why”, states Mistier.

I asked him what his number one goal for the next year is and what band he would most like to open for. He won my heart when he told me NIN, and going on a “full blown tour in Europe”. You can listen to the band on www.myspace.com/ism.

MIDNIGHT TO TWELVE

Band members:
Jon Hartman – vocals
Al Baca - bass
Steve Oliver – keyboards
Daniel Jordan – guitar
Drew Molleur - drums

I spoke with Al Baca, bassist for MtT. Their self-titled CD Midnight to Twelve will be released and in stores July 22nd. They are already one of Wal-Mart Corporation’s featured artists

You may have heard songs “Slam” (TV show One Tree Hill) and “How Bad” (Stanley Cup coverage by NHL) – quite a success story considering they were just selling self-produced CDs out of their bus…

The band just finished seven shows with the infamous Van’s Warped Tour. Their last date was in St. Louis, MO. This was their first time on the tour, “the heat was really hard on us”, said Al. VWT truly is a test of endurance for bands playing during the hottest months of the year performing in tight, enclosed, hot spaces.

The band is traveling and promoting the new CD thru their current radio tour. Stops at major radio stations nationwide wins big point with radio execs as the band sets up shop and plays live for the staff….landing their songs on the air waves for all to hear while boosting CD sales.

I asked Al who their audience is, “Anybody and everybody. 12 and over. We’re a rock band, main stream rock.” He closed by saying, “This is the most excited we’ve been, everything we have been working for to get to July 22nd.”

ANOTHER BIG MACHINE
Interview with Justin McCoy - 3/13

March 13 – Justin McCoy
Website: www.myspace.com/anotherbigmachine
Band members:
Justin McCoy – vocals
Josh Lee – drums
D White – guitar
Dane Carmouche – bass and vocals

Another Big Machine is from Baton Rouge, LA and formed in the year 2006 right after Hurricane Katrina hit.

In the same year, they signed with Rising Storm Records. Now, their new hit single “Sedated” will be out March 24th.

I asked Justin how they were discovered. “We had a manager from Baton Rouge who was in L.A. and met the CEO of Rising Storm…..and then we were signed.” It was just that easy. Their self-titled CD “Another Big Machine” makes its debut in stores on June 24th.

“I’m excited, it’s really our sound!” I asked, “What is your sound?” “It’s soulful, it’s positive…it’s good ole’ rock n’ roll.” What is your favorite song on this CD? “All These Lights”; the bass player sings the lead track, it is acoustically driven and I love the way it sounds.” Who wrote it? “Dane and I.”

I asked if there was a tour in the making. “Radio touring. March 31st thru April 11th, we’ll hit 14 cities and make stops at radio stations where we’ll play something acoustically live on the air. We will look for feedback.” And after that? “Hopefully a full band tour.”

If you were on tour, who would you most like to tour with? “Matchbox 20.” How do you feel about the future of playing a venue that holds 24,000 people? “I think it will be awesome to have a sea of people in front of me!” “This is a really good record, we worked really hard on it.” “We look forward to everyone coming out to see us!”

You can purchase the record at iTunes, and it will be available at Target, Wal-Mart, and Best Buy. Contact the band at www.myspace.com/anotherbigmachine

Thank you Justin, best of luck!

TANTRIC
March 5, 2008 - Interview

TANTRIC
March 5th – Hugo Ferreira
Website: www.myspace.com/tantric
Band Members:
Hugo Ferreira – vocals
Kevin Miller – drums
Joe Pessia – guitar
Erik Leonhardt – bass
Marcus Ratzenboeck – violin

I spoke with TANTRIC front man, Hugo Ferreira in anticipation of the band’s new release “The End Begins”. The CD will be in stores nationwide on April 22nd.

Hugo spoke to me from his home in nearby Louisville, KY. I asked him how he felt about the new tour, which begins on March 29th. “I’m excited.”

“I’ve been home for far too long…” “This is the best CD I’ve ever written in my life – this is our third record.” “I had a year to write this CD, it just tastes sweeter this time.”

I asked him what inspired his lyrics this time around. “Maverick (former record label) folded…our management was gone…and all the band members changed.” “Kevin (drummer) came in from FUEL and he brought our bass player. And I added a violin player to add a different twist.”

The End Begins” is on the Silent Majority Group record label headed by former Creed manager, Jeff Hanson. I asked how things are going with the new label, “I kind of knew Jeff thru Creed, it’s kind of crazy how easy it was.” “I write the songs, they book the tours, we have about 50 cities on our tour.”

On a more personal note, Hugo was very open about his ‘behind the scenes’ info…”I’m not married, I don’t have kids, and so I collect cars. I love cars and I love to come to Indy and go to the races.” His father and grandfather were both musicians, his father taught him how to play the piano and the accordion. “My father would hold the accordion sideways and I would push the keys.” “I grew up with music; I never not had music in my life.”

Hugo encourages fans to log on to the website www.myspace.com/tantric where they can buy the CD now and it is less expensive than in the stores!

Watch for the upcoming tour dates. By the way, your emails to the band will be answered, they read and answer daily!

Thank you Hugo, Leo and SMG.

FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH
March 5, 2008 - Interview

FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH

March 5th - Jeremy Spencer
Website: www.fivefingerdeathpunch.com
Band Members:
Ivan Moody – vocals
Zoltan Bathory – guitar
Jeremy Spencer – drums
Matt Snell – bass
Darrell Roberts – guitars

Jeremy Spencer was standing outside on his balcony in sunny California smoking a cigarette while he graciously spoke with me by phone.

Although Jeremy is now a CA resident, he could relate to my gloomy description of the ice and snow outside my window – Jeremy is from Boonville, IN near Evansville.

Five Finger Death Punch have quite a story…they formed less than three years ago and were signed almost immediately. “We produced our own CD, so we had it all ready.” “The Firm (Firm Music) saw us and then we showcased privately for them, and they signed us.”

They then went on tour with The Family Values Tour with Korn and Hellyeah (Chad Gray). This summer they will come thru Indy as they tour with Slipknot and Disturbed on the newly formed “Rockstar Energy Mayhem Tour”. The tour begins on July 9th in Seattle, WA and the Indianapolis date has yet to be announced.

Their credentials shine, “We were 144 on the top 200 last week.” “We finished in the top five on Headbangers Ball, and “The Bleeding” (The Way of the Fist CD) has been in the top 10 on Active Rock Radio for the last four weeks!” “We’re looking forward to seeing everybody on the tour!”

You can find out more by logging on to www.fivefingerdeathpunch.com. The tour dates will also be posted on www.livemusicindiana.com.

Thanks Jeremy…

SILVERCHAIR
will be appearing at The Music Mill
in Indianapolis on December 11, 2007

SILVERCHAIR

I spoke with bass player, Chris Joannou from Silverchair in hype of their appearance here in Indy on 12/11.  Silverchair is an Australian rock trio, comprised of Daniel Johns, Chris Joannou and Ben Gillies, that formed in 1994 when the members were yes, only 15 years old…

I asked Chris how it felt to be “superstars” at the age of 15.  “Crazy”, he replied.  I asked how they came up with hits back at that age?  “Dan (Daniel Johns – vocals) has a lot of honesty in his writing, and we didn’t underestimate ourselves.”  How did you maintain that type of life while trying to go to school and keep it all together?  “We had a tutor on the road, we managed to find the right balance and we had good friends around.”

Silverchair came back to the states early this year.  Chris said, “Our shows are awesome,
our fans have been waiting for us!”  “Young Modern (Sire Records) is a natural progression of our music.”  “There is no compromise on this record.”   “We’ve been on tour now since April and will keep going thru next year.”  “We’re currently in our U.S. tour and then will go home to Australia on December 18 for a couple of weeks.”

Chris plays a custom designed bass made for him in Sydney.  His favorite band as a whole were
the Beatles and his favorite Silverchair song is “If You Keep Losing Sleep”.

COURSE OF NATURE

COURSE OF NATURE
Website - http://myspace.com/courseofnature
Los Angeles, CA

Course of Nature is an alternative/rock band which was formed in Alabama in 2001 by vocalist Mark Wilkerson. They are a four piece band that was recently signed by Silent Majority.

Silent Majority record label was founded by Jeff Hanson and is a division of Warner Music out of Orlando, FL. Jeff is Creed’s and Sevendust’s former manager. He discovered Course of Nature just months ago during a showcase at Center Staging located in Burbank, CA. Center Staging is a place for bands to be discovered as it is only minutes from the airport, making it convenient for execs to fly in, see the show and fly out… And that is exactly what happened for Mark and his band.

Their new CD “Damaged” is set for release on January 22, 2008 and will be sold in stores nationwide. ‘Anger Cage’ will be their first single.

VAN’S WARPED TOUR
8/7/2007

As I Lay Dying:
Website - www.asilaydying.com

I spoke with Nick (guitar player) from As I Lay Dying for a brief moment  during his visit to Indiana. As I Lay Dying is from San Diego, CA and formed in the year 2001. Although this is their first VWT, they toured with Ozzfest and played here in 2005. Their greatest influences have  been Iron Maiden and Pantera. When I asked Nick what their goal was,  he replied, “To play the music that we’re playing full time.”

They are on Metal Blade Records and are releasing a new CD, AN OCEAN
BETWEEN US
that will be in stores everywhere on 8/21. www.asilaydying.com

Thank you Nick Hipa and Jen Bryan -

The Spill Canvas:
www.myspace.com/tsc

I met with Joe Beck, the drummer from The Spill Canvas.
This Sioux Falls, SD band formed in 2003 and has had tremendous
breaks in the world of music. Warner Brothers Records offered
them a record deal less than one year ago… They found a good
manager who seemed to know just the right people, who took them
to just the right manager, who then took them to WBR. This is a
good education for bands that are “serious” about making it; have
a plan for success, take the right steps and find the right people.

Their greatest influences have been Save the Day and Fleetwood Mac.
They have a CD being released in October on Sire Records and you can
see more on this band at www.myspace.com/tsc.

Thanks to Joe and Gillian!

Biffy Clyro:
www.myspace.com/biffyclyro

If you haven’t heard of this new band signed to
Road Runner Records, then take note. This rock
trio from Scotland will soon be seen touring with
Queens of the Stone Age.

They have only been signed here in the States for
a few months and are already touring with VWT and
then hitting the road again in October. At the same
time their new CD Puzzle will be released in stores
everywhere. Their greatest influences have been
Guns N’ Roses and Soundgarden – doesn’t get much
better than that! Check them out - www.myspace.com/biffyclyro

Final performance with FUEL, taken on
September 10, 2005 in Indianapolis, IN.

Brett Scallions, the former dynamic front man for FUEL, has taken a new life in the world of rock. Brett has joined other legendary musicians to form a new sound from the band Circus Diablo. There are three former front men in this new band, but only one, Billy Morrison takes center stage.

I asked Brett how he transitioned from front man to bass player, “I love being a musician, a bass player, a drummer….I’m not a one trick pony.” “When you are the front man, those are big shoes to fill…” So, hard to handle – not at all, they are all happy with this new combination of talent and positioning.

Brett, “I was playing with The X’s in New York one night, and I saw my friend Billy Morrison, and it all happened from there.” “But, I get to have my cake and eat it too, I am the front man for Riders on the Storm, so I’m having fun with that too.”

In closing, I asked if there would ever be a FUEL reunion, “I would never say never, but I am really happy right now, I’m busy, and that’s not what I’m about right now.” “We’re really creative, nobody likes to be told what to play…”

Brett and his wife are expecting a baby boy next month and currently reside in Los Angeles. You can see Circus Diablo at Ozzfest on August 14th at Verizon Wireless Music Center in Noblesville, IN.

Thanks to Brett for his time and to Amanda Cagan.

TESLA
June 29, 2007 - Interview

TESLA
Website - www.teslatheband.com

I had the opportunity to interview Frank Hannon
today by phone from California.
Here’s what Frank had to say:

KH: When was your very first tour? FH: 1986, six months after
the release of our first record. We had a video
on MTV, but we didn’t tour for six months after that.
We wanted to wait for “arena” shows as opposed to club dates.
We opened for David Lee Roth.

KH: what is your favorite Tesla song? FH: We have a lot
of different styles – for hard rock, I like Modern
Day Cowboy, and for our ballad, What You Give.

KH: How many band member changes have you had since
the beginning? FH: Only one in over 20 years!
Brian and I started this band, and we’ve had
only one change, the guitar player.

KH: What do you feel is your greatest accomplishment over the years?
FH: Surviving the ups and downs. Writing a song from the heart
that sounds as good today as it did 20 years ago.

KH: I am curious, what is your favorite guitar? FH: Gibson, any Gibson.
Right now, the Gibson SG, I like the Flying V’s and the 335.

KH: In closing, what would you like to say about Tesla?
FH: We’re hard working, blue collar, people’s band…
People can relate to our music.

You can see Tesla live at The Vogue on Tuesday, July 17th.
Thanks to Frank and to Amanda Cagan!!

12:11p.m., August 30, 2006
I just spoke with Jeff Pilson by phone, here’s what he had to say about Foreigner:
“We have a show in Indy on Friday night, September 15th and we hope everyone will come out to see us play that night. The band is in tip-top shape right now. We’ll be selling our CD at the show, signed and complete with two bonus tracks. We’re very proud of that record.
We have a live DVD that will be out early next year that will have new songs as well.”

“We have wonderful chemistry in our band, which money can’t buy. I worked with Jason before and then Kelly came in 2005. It’s an asshole-free band right now...”
“We hope people will come to our site www.foreigneronline.com. There are other downloads on the site and they can buy the CD there as well.
We’ll see everybody there on the 15th!”

Foreigner’s hits include: Feels Like the First Time, Cold as Ice, Long Long Way From Home, Hot Blooded, Dirty White Boy, Double Vision, Jukebox Hero, Head Games, Urgent and I Want to Know What Love Is, which was a #1 hit in 1984. The “live” CD is excellent.

MASTERS OF HORROR TOUR
Mudvayne & Sevendust
November 25, 2005 - Interviews

MUDVAYNE
Genre: Metal
Website: www.mudvayne.com
CD: LOST AND FOUND
Band Members:
Chad Gray – Vocals
Greg Tribbett - Guitar
Ryan Martinie – Bass
Matt McDonough - Drums

It was one of Indiana’s cold nights. A night when the wind went right thru your skin and then thru your bones and out the other side, leaving you numb and miserable. Some MUDVAYNE and Sevendust fans had waited outside four to five hours just to secure their prime real estate spot in front of the stage. The fans were painted, pierced and mohawked; very creative and very entertaining.
As I entered the MUDVAYNE dressing room I was pleasantly surprised to see Chad Gray waiting for me. That was not the original plan. He was dressed casually in jeans, a Coors Light NFL sweatshirt and a dark scarf wrapped around his neck to keep the vocal cords warm and protected. He feverishly popped peppermints into his mouth, and offered as many to me as we began to talk. Chad was gracious, polite, dedicated to his art and definitely ‘a man with a plan’.

LMI: “I really like the song Rain. Sun. Gone.”
CG: “It’s about a long time friend of ours from Peoria. He was murdered two years ago. This is a living tribute to him. He was a great friend to the band.”

LMI: “This is your third release, right? You made a comment about how you grew from the first CD to the second and now to the third. How the first CD was basically a demo.”
CG: “We grew as a family over the last six years. It almost felt easier to write this time. We refined our craft.”

LMI: “I saw you and shot you at Ozzfest this summer. How did you feel about being picked for that tour?”
CG: “We were really excited. We were the ‘mystery’ band, the band they waited to tell everybody about.” “It’s a very HOT tour.”

LMI: “How do you keep that much charisma going on when you are hot and miserable?”
CG: “We’ve subjected ourselves to the most miserable situations.”

LMI: “What happened to the makeup?”
CG: “We’re artists. We naturally evolve; you can’t do the same thing all the time…”

LMI: “Was it your goal to become a national touring act? Everybody wants that, but was it your goal, what did you do?”
CG: “It’s always our goal to make a point. We traveled, we competed in battles of bands, we showcased.” “We started meeting people and we played regionally.” “Then we showcased in Chicago and Clown (Shawn from Slipknot) saw us. He wanted to make sure we not trying to rip off his own band, instead he liked us and helped us.” “That is how we toured with Slipknot.”

LMI: “How has all of this changed you?”
CG: “It’s notoriety, you learn to keep your feet on the ground. You just have to be respectful and appreciate your roots.” “It’s hard being on the road. It’s hard being healthy; we basically all sleep together…” “We all cram ourselves on the bus.”

LMI: “Who are your mentors, what bands do you like?”
CG: “Metallica, Pantera, Elvis, LZ, Beatles, definitely Ozzy.”

LMI: “Who writes your lyrics? You?”
CG: “Me.” “We have conversations though about where we’re going and we have a theme.” “We grid the map.”

LMI: “Who named the band?”
CG: “Me.”

LMI: “In closing, what is your purpose as a band?”
CG: “To move forward. Not all of the emphasis on one facet or on part of the band.” “For people to say – ‘they’re honest, they’re real’.”

And that they are – ‘real and honest’. Chad Gray and Morgan Rose (Sevendust) were two of the nicest guys I have met. He works hard, he sweats hard and he sings hard. Then he packs himself onto his tour bus like a sardine and travels to the next city, talks to the next interviewer and plays the next venue. It is a hard life, but he handles it with maturity and grace. Thanks Chad – stay in touch. And special thanks to ABC and EPIC records. Kim.

SEVENDUST
Genre: Rock/Heavy
Inception: 1997
Website: www.sevendust.info
CD:
NEXT
Band Members:
Lajon Witherspoon - Vocals
John Connolly - Guitar
Sonny Mayo - Guitar
Vince Hornsby - Bass
Morgan Rose - Drums

I just spoke with Sevendust drummer, Morgan Rose. He was traveling by bus into Peoria for their show tonight.

LMI: “You guys have a new sound, it’s a new
Sevendust.” MR: “Yea, we went back to our roots, but heavier. That was our vision.”

LMI: “On the first song of the CD, I heard a combination of Slayer and Slipknot with Marilyn Manson lyrics.” Morgan laughed and said, “Wow, I like that comparison.”

LMI: “UGLY is your first single, it’s a good song, and it keeps climbing the charts.” MR: “We’re really happy with where it’s at.”

LMI: “I really like the song PIECES too, it’s heavy and has a heavy bass line.” MR: “That’s my favorite tune on the record.”

LMI: “Tell me about your drums and your style.” MR: “I play Pearl, double kick…my style – out of control.”

LMI: “I see that you have made a lot of personal appearances just in the last couple of months.” MR: “We helped the hurricane victims,
and we back our troops. We made a lot of money for them, and we made nothing, we wanted to help.”

LMI: “I think it’s awesome that you produced your own record.” MR: “We did our own record. This is the only way we could do it.
We couldn’t bare anybody telling us how to sound any more.” “And we figured if somebody liked it, they’d let us know.”

LMI: “So, you’re headlining at the House of Blues in Orlando for New Years Eve.” MR: “Yea, we’ve had the headlining gig for NYE in
Orlando for the last couple of years and it’s just nasty, it’s really fun.” “Then on January 12th we head back out for seven or eight weeks and then go to Europe.”

At this point, I could hear the rest of band coming to find him…so, our few quiet moments were coming to an end. Sevendust came together in Atlanta, GA just eight years ago. Band members include Lajon Witherspoon (vocals), John Connolly (guitar), Vince Hornsby (bass), Sonny Mayo (guitar) and Morgan Rose (drummer). NEXT is their fifth release, this is a great CD. They put a lot into this record lyrically; hurt, pain, their own personal losses. It is a surprising mix of great melodies with very heavy instrumentation, definitely a CD you should ask for at Christmas…

You can read more about them at www.sevendust.info and www.winedarkrecords.com. Thanks Morgan!

JOHN 5
August 4, 2005 - Interview

JOHN 5

I spoke with John 5 today (August 4, 2005) from Detroit, MI during the OZZFEST TOUR.

Kim: “John, this is a real privilege for me to be able to have an interview with you, I am a big fan.” “I first want to ask you what you have to say about your years with Marilyn Manson, as I am a big fan of his as well.” John: “I wouldn’t change a thing. I had a great time, it was a great experience. I enjoyed every minute of it. It was pleasurable.”

K: “You came in during the Mechanical Animals tour, right?” John: “That’s right, right when they finished the recording.” “Actually, Marilyn took that picture of me that’s in Mechanical Animals.”

K: “And then one day it was just over.” John: “Yea, but it wasn’t a bad breakup, just the normal thing. There was no drama; we’re just doing our own things.” K: “I read in a music magazine that you were tired of the violence in MM, is that true?” John: “Not really.” “There was violence, but that came with the territory, you know.” “If you join a football team, you are going to be tackled…”

K: “What was your favorite song that you co-wrote for MM?” John: “Disposable Teens, Mobscene.” “But, Count to Six and Die was my very favorite, and there isn’t any guitar on that song, but I wrote it on my guitar. That is my favorite.”

K: “Do you have one outstanding memorable moment when touring with Marilyn?” John: “Actually, I do.” It was the night that I first stepped on stage with Marilyn at the 1998 MTV awards show.”

K: “Are you still friends with Marilyn?” John: “Yes, I talked to him right before the OZZFEST tour started.” Kim: “Is there a chance that you will help him out on any future records?” John: “Sure! No bad blood.”

K: “What was it like going from K.D. Lang to Halford to DLR?” John: “It depends on the gig, it’s really cool.” “It’s like going to a different movie every night.” “I’ve always been a fan of everyone I have played with. If I wouldn’t have been playing with them, I would have gone to see them.”

K: “And now you have a new CD,
SONGS FOR SANITY. This is a guitar solo project.” John: “Yes, it’s my follow up to VERTIGO. It has Steve Vai on it.” “I just do this for my total love of music. It’s totally from my heart!” K: “You are said to be one of the most technically advanced guitarists in the business today – what do you say about that?” John: “It’s really cool. I don’t do this to say, look how cool I am.” “I love to learn and to broaden my mind. I don’t do it for the ego thing.”

K: You also have your own guitar now, a Fender Telecaster.” John: “It’s the Rolls Royce of guitars.” “A guitar with my name on it is really an honor.” “This will live on forever.” K: “What makes this guitar unique?” John: “The headstock is different. This is the first time in 50 years that is has been changed.” “This guitar was made for country music, and I made it so that it can be played with Manson and Zombie.”

K: “On a different note, tell us what John 5 means.” John: “Biblical, it’s in the bible.” “And it’s the five points in the pentagram, kind of a good/bad thing.” K: “That was going to be my next question; I really believe in God, do you?” John: “I do, of course.” “Don’t go out and kill anybody, but you also don’t have to go to church all the time either.” “Be a good person.”

K: “Recently you were married, where do you and your wife reside?” John: “California.” K: “How is marriage on the road?” John: “So far, so good…we’re still together…”

In closing John Lowery is an intelligent, well spoken person. His career just keeps gaining more momentum, if that is even possible. Thank you John for taking the time to call! You can read more about John 5 at www.john-5.com
